Workshop on Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling: A Catalyst for Electric Vehicle Growth

FROM 20 Dec 2024 TO 20 Dec 2024

Venue : Board Room, Faculty Block - II, 1AB & Electrical Machines Lab @ 11:45 AM

The Department of Electrical Engineering in collaboration with AIC, MUJ is going to organize a Workshop on "Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling: A Catalyst for Electric Vehicle Growth" on 20th December 2024 at 11:45 PM in Board Room, Faculty Block - II, 1AB & Electrical Machines Lab. Rajasthan has emerged as one of the top five states in India for Electric Vehicle (EV) penetration, increasing from 6.34% in FY 2023-24 to 6.73% in FY 2024-25 (Oct.). This growth necessitates robust Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) waste management systems. This research analyzes the recycling potential of LIBs in Rajasthan, calculating waste generation by e-2 wheelers amounting to 1643.74 MT in FY 2026-27 based on Battery Waste Management Rules (BWMR) 2022 compliance cycles & Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). It examines the feasibility of a circular economy centered around the Integrated Resource Recovery Park (IRRP) in Jaipur, the EV Zone in Bhiwadi, growing LiB recycling plants and the existing e-waste recycling ecosystem in Rajasthan. The study identifies critical gaps such as transportation risks, safety protocols, and the need for a knowledge sharing industry led consortium, a battery passport system to enhance traceability and accountability. Recommendations include establishing LIB recycling plants, integrating the e-waste recycling chain, forming a consortium for knowledge transfer, and implementing Digital Product Passport (DPP) for LIBs. These insights are crucial for policymakers, recyclers, and industry stakeholders to develop a sustainable circular economy in Rajasthan, contributing to economic growth and environmental sustainability.

The distinguished speaker of the Workshop is: Er. Neha Sakka, JVVNL, State Nodal Agency for EVCS
